Evaluation of Performance of Blood Bank in Chung-Ang University Hospital During 1984(Ⅰ)

Abstract
|
|
|
Many authors reported that single unit transfusion (SUT) is not necessary in the most of
cases and it is one of the problems of blood bank in our country.
Whole blood transfusion was replaced by component therapy near 80% due to complica
tion of whole blood in many developed countries. But many Korean clinicians better choice
and use fresh whole blood than blood components for transfusion.
So we evaluated the amount of total transfused blood, SUT, component therapy and com
plicated patients in reviewed 383 patients(1816 units) during one year, 1984, retrospectively
in order to better service and management in blood bank of Chung-Ang university hospital. Follow results are obtained;
1) The average volume and frequency per one patient were 5 units during two times transfusion.
2) SUT were 352 units among the reviewed total 1816 units(19.4%) and the most common user departments were Urology (36. 5%), General surgery (25. 9%), and Orthopedic surgery (25.7%).
3) Component therapy were used 541 units(29.8%), and the most common user departments were Internal medicine (61.5%) Pediatrics (49.5%) and General surgery(11.1%).
4) The most common used blood component was packed RBC(50.0%). The next components were platelet concentration (33. 9%), leukocyte concentration (12. 3%), fresh frozen plasma(2.8%) and washed RBC(1.0%)orderly.
5) 5 patients show mild complication (fever, chilling and nausea) among reviewed 383 patients.
